Alongside the deck, skateboard bearings are undoubtedly among the most heavily used individual parts of your setup. They are closest to the ground and, at the same time, some of the most delicate parts of your skateboard. Dust is their constant companion, and water or mud are their mortal enemies. However, if you do happen to ride through a puddle or even in the rain (not recommended), all is not lost—after all, you can remove and clean the bearings. Here are a few tips:
If you take the time to clean your bearings every now and then, there's a good chance they'll run reliably for a long time.
Nowadays, there are ball bearings with two, one, or even no shields.
Shields are the “side covers” and should be removed before cleaning.
Once they have been removed, you should soak the ball bearings in methylated spirits to remove any dirt. You can soak the shields in soapy water or also use methylated spirits.
After cleaning and oiling, reattach the shields – or not.
