The level of breathability depends primarily on the type of upper material. When it comes to ventilation alone, breathable fabrics, canvas, and hemp are likely the top choices alongside synthetic mesh. After-skate or casual shoes are often made from these materials.
In a model designed for skateboarding, there are various ways to ensure perfect airflow. The toe cap, heel area, and all critical zones—such as the ollie area and lacing—are made of abrasion-resistant upper material, which, however, is far less breathable. The toe cap or the side panels of such a style are therefore perforated in some cases—in some instances, the side panels on the inside of the shoe are also equipped with ventilation holes (vent holes) or plastic mesh panels.
A cleverly designed material mix also ensures fresh air circulation—as long as all critical areas are made of abrasion-resistant material, the shoe is also well-suited for skating. The side panels can therefore be made of lightweight, breathable canvas, hemp, or nylon. Mesh is frequently used for the tongue.
